Tucked away in South Australia’s charming capital is a men’s shed with a name as bold as the spirit behind it — The Grumpies Blokes’ Shed. But don’t let the name fool you — the only thing “grumpy” about this shed is the cheeky humour that sparked its creation.

Originally called The Bloke’s Shed, the group was rebranded after a Heather, who often makes them morning tea, joked that the members were just a bunch of “grumpy old men.” The name stuck — and “The Grumpies” was born. “We even made Grumpy T-shirts,” says Ian, one of the shed’s proud and long-serving members.

Located in Adelaide, The Grumpies Blokes’ Shed is more than just a gathering place — it’s a hub of hands-on activity, camaraderie, and creativity. From woodworking and welding to lawn mower repairs and even firewood production, there’s something for every bloke looking to stay active and connected. A newly established mechanical section now sees members fixing everything from whipper snippers to donated twin-cab utes.

The shed is also home to a striking piece of artwork: a 9-metre by 2-metre mural featuring members of the shed, painted by Paul, a retired art teacher and friend of a member. “We’re wondering if it’s the largest mural inside a men’s shed in Australia,” Ian says proudly.

One of the most unique aspects of The Grumpies is its access to skilled volunteers. For example, a retired TAFE
welding lecturer now teaches welding every Wednesday, a rare and valuable opportunity for members to pick up
new skills or refine old ones.

But The Grumpies isn’t just about work — it’s about community. “I retired ten years ago, came to the shed, and I’m still here. That’s how good it is,” Ian laughs.

Why Visit Adelaide?

While The Grumpies might be the main draw for shed enthusiasts, Adelaide itself offers plenty of reasons to stick around. As Ian puts it, “It’s a city that feels like a country town.”

Adelaide boasts world-class attractions like the Adelaide Oval — “probably one of the best in the world,” says Ian — and plays host to iconic events like the AFL Gather Round, Tour Down Under, and Adelaide Fringe. The city buzzes with activity, especially during festival season, yet remains laid-back and accessible.

Surrounding Adelaide is some of South Australia’s finest natural and cultural beauty. From the world-renowned wine regions and picturesque Adelaide Hills to coastal getaways like

Port Lincoln and historical gems like Goolwa — where the very first men’s shed concept was born — there’s no shortage of places to explore. Even the remote and rugged Flinders Ranges, with the breathtaking Wilpena Pound, beckon adventurers and history buffs alike.

And if you’re planning your trip, don’t forget to add Kangaroo Island to the itinerary — a stunning wildlife haven just a ferry ride away (and still on Ian’s personal bucket list!).
