The Kalamunda Men’s Shed in the foothills of Perth, Western Australia has a system where members build their skills and confidence in a safe, structured way. The initiative includes purpose-built woodworking kits and a traffic-light-inspired “green dot” system for machinery use, ensuring all members are supported no matter their experience level.

Hands-On Kits for Confidence and Community
New members, especially those who attend on Fridays, are welcomed with hands-on kits designed to help them gradually build up their woodworking skills. These kits include everything needed to assemble items such as possum boxes, bird boxes and bird feeders.
Each kit comes complete with a jig, pre-cut timber, a cutting list, and a step-by-step guide that begins with a picture of the final product. The design allows members with lower skill levels to contribute meaningfully right away. There’s also a dedicated painting group that finishes the assembled boxes, which are later sold at open days or to local groups such as Kanyana Wildlife.
“This system is a great way for new members to gain confidence,” Fridays Shed Boss, Andrew Duncan, explained. “As they complete more kits, many begin to feel ready to progress to the next level and start learning to use machinery.”
Green Dot System: Safety Through Visibility
To support this gradual skills development, the shed has also implemented a color-coded “green dot” system to manage machinery access. Regardless of a new member’s background—whether they’re a seasoned tradesperson or have never used a power tool—they must go through the same safety and training process.
The Kalamunda Men’s Shed houses about 13 different machines, and members are trained individually on each one. Only after demonstrating safe and confident use do they earn a green dot on their membership badge, which must be worn inside the workshop at all times.
“There are different shed bosses in charge each day, and not everyone knows every member,” said Andrew. “The green dot gives them an instant way to see who’s certified to use each machine. It keeps everyone safe.”
A Supportive Pathway to Skill Growth
The combination of beginner-friendly kits and the green dot skills system offers a supportive and inclusive pathway for members to grow. Over time, today’s novices become tomorrow’s mentors, helping to continue the cycle of learning and camaraderie.
By focusing on safety, skill development, and community involvement, the Kalamunda Men’s Shed continues to prove itself as much more than a woodworking space—it’s a place where men come together, learn together, and contribute together.
