About our shed
About Us
The Shed is a place for men to gather with other men and drink tea and coffee, scoff down a few bikkies, use profane language a lot, make stuff, fix stuff, cook lunch, eat well and enjoy a comraderie that can only be found where good men get together.
The Avoca Men's Shed came into being as part of an initiative concerning Men's Health.
The first General Meeting was held on the 1st August 2011 with a great turn-out of 18 interested men. The Men's shed was allocated a disused shed in the Avoca Recreation reserve, and after some renovation and a wiring upgrade, the Shed's Official Opening took place on the 3 October 2011.
Since then the Avoca Men's Shed has gone ahead in leaps and bounds: (or given the age of some members.....skips and shuffles)
• Membership has grown to 43 (as at the end of March 2012)
• Plans have been submitted and approved for extension of the existing Shed facilities,
and work is in progress
• The Shed members run a stall at the Monthly Riverside Market to raise funds for the extension
• Shed equipment has grown from nothing to a reasonably equipped wood & metalworking facility
due to donations of equipment from members & the public
• A veggie garden has been built - harvested - and re-planted. Most produce from the Garden is
donated to the Avoca Community Food Pantry

Positive impacts
The Australian Men’s Shed Association (AMSA) is the national service provider supporting more than 1,200 Men’s, Women’s and Community Sheds and is recognised as one of Australia’s largest male-based community development organisations.
AMSA was established in 2007 by a collection of Australian independent community-based Men’s Sheds to represent, support and promote the Men’s Shed movement. It was founded on the principle of sharing information between sheds and those communities wishing to establish and operate a Men’s Shed. It acts as a central hub for information exchange.
