About our shed

About Us

The Showgrounds Community Men’s Shed engages with the community to undertake activities in a constructive way to optimise member’s physical and emotional wellbeing.

Our Aim is :

  • To address the issues of men’s mental, physical, and emotional health and wellbeing in the community.
  • To support the social interaction of men in transitional periods (e.g. separation, redundancy, bereavement, retirement, ill health.)
  • To facilitate links between men and health-related agencies, family organisations and specialist health professionals within the community.
  • To provide a strong social fabric for men experiencing isolation

The Showgrounds Community Men’s Shed provides opportunities for members to work on their own projects, join a team working on Shed activities and tasks, or just share time, recreation and fellowship with other members. Many of our activities include partners and family, so we celebrate the broader world of men as well as the uniqueness of men together.

New members and anyone interested in who we are and what we do, are very welcome any time we’re open, so feel free to call by the Shed at the Claremont Showgrounds (enter through Gate 8 off Ashton Avenue), and have a chat to us to see how we go about men’s interests and wellbeing.

The Shed welcomes requests from the Public to undertake jobs from small repairs to larger woodworking projects for reasonable fees, so bring us your ideas or items that need fixing and see what we can offer.

Positive impacts

Camaraderie

"I've found a great group of mates"

Mateship is an important pillar of every Men’s Shed – first and foremost the shed is a place for men to knock about with a group of like-minded mates.

Community

“I give back to the community”

Men’s Sheds are vital community investments delivering programmes and activities that foster community spirit and contribute to building a more inclusive Australia.

Health & Wellbeing

“My health and wellbeing is better because I'm a Shedder”

Many shedders experience improved mental health outcomes. Men (and women) involved at their local Shed report increased self-esteem through participation and learning new skills; de-stigmatisation of experiencing mental health and de-stigmatisation of prevalent social issues related to mental health.

Watch — More than just a shed

The Australian Men’s Shed Association (AMSA) is the national service provider supporting more than 1,200 Men’s, Women’s and Community Sheds and is recognised as one of Australia’s largest male-based community development organisations.

AMSA was established in 2007 by a collection of Australian independent community-based Men’s Sheds to represent, support and promote the Men’s Shed movement. It was founded on the principle of sharing information between sheds and those communities wishing to establish and operate a Men’s Shed. It acts as a central hub for information exchange.
