About Us

The Buninyong Men’s Shed was initially just a group of men from the local community who, after retiring, decided that it would be a great idea to get together on a regular basis and do something that would interest them and also give something to the community. The group started with about 8 blokes setting up in one of their sheds. From there they began doing a variety of projects that were of interest to them. This time together also provided them with the opportunity to enjoy the company of other men in a very relaxed social environment. Over time the group expanded as they invited other men from the local area to participate. The aim was to minimise the stress and worries for anyone who may have been experiencing varying degrees of social isolation and to create a community vibe within the group.

Over time and with the number of participants growing the newly formed Buninyong Men’s Shed received funding from the State Government to erect a new shed. With additional assistance from the Ballarat City Council and the Buninyong Community Bank the new shed was erected beside the platform of the old Buninyong Railway Station. The Shed was opened in early 2015 after the members had spent many days and weeks fitting out the workshop area and the kitchen area. A key focus was to ensure that there were ample work benches for everyone to use. The shed was extended in 2017 to accommodate the ever-growing membership numbers and machinery needs. Today our membership hovers around 40.

The Buninyong Men’s Shed is a member of both the Victorian Men’s Shed Association and the Australian Men’s Sheds Association.

Positive impacts

Camaraderie

"I've found a great group of mates"

Mateship is an important pillar of every Men’s Shed – first and foremost the shed is a place for men to knock about with a group of like-minded mates.

Community

“I give back to the community”

Men’s Sheds are vital community investments delivering programmes and activities that foster community spirit and contribute to building a more inclusive Australia.

Health & Wellbeing

“My health and wellbeing is better because I'm a Shedder”

Many shedders experience improved mental health outcomes. Men (and women) involved at their local Shed report increased self-esteem through participation and learning new skills; de-stigmatisation of experiencing mental health and de-stigmatisation of prevalent social issues related to mental health.

Watch — More than just a shed

The Australian Men’s Shed Association (AMSA) is the national service provider supporting more than 1,200 Men’s, Women’s and Community Sheds and is recognised as one of Australia’s largest male-based community development organisations.

AMSA was established in 2007 by a collection of Australian independent community-based Men’s Sheds to represent, support and promote the Men’s Shed movement. It was founded on the principle of sharing information between sheds and those communities wishing to establish and operate a Men’s Shed. It acts as a central hub for information exchange.
