Celebrating Men’s Sheds this September

Men’s Shed Week celebrating Shed Life

This Men’s Shed Week (23 – 29 September) we’re putting a spotlight on “Shed Life” – showcasing the diversity of Shedders and shed activities.

Life at a Men’s Shed is as diverse as the characters you’ll find at the shed, so this Men’s Shed Week we’re taking the opportunity to showcase the repertoire of people and activities one might find when they wander into a Men’s Shed.

We encourage all members to use the week to promote Men’s Sheds within the community – a Men’s Shed Week resource pack will be emailed to all members later this week.

8th National Men’s Shed Gathering acknowledging the contributions and benefits Of the men’s Shed community

Next week Shedders from all around the country, and as far abroad as Ireland and Iceland, will come together in Adelaide for the Australian Men’s Shed Association’s 8th National Men’s Shed Gathering from 10 – 12 September 2019.

Held every two years, the National Gathering brings the Men’s Shed community together to share knowledge, stories and experiences to further strengthen the now international Men’s Shed movement.

This year’s Gathering is themed ‘Our Community’ to acknowledge the increasing role and contributions of Men’s Sheds to their communities.

“Men’s Sheds have become vital community assets and, in many regions, the main or only focal point for positive male engagement and activity,” says AMSA Executive Officer David Helmers.

A host of Men’s Shed experts (including a number of Shedders) and professional service providers will deliver traditional content on Men’s Shed operations, practice and tool workshops, as well as information on men’s health and wellbeing.

One of the highlights of the event will be the announcement of the recipients of the 2019 National Men’s Shed Awards. The Awards recognise the outstanding and unique work of Men’s Sheds across five categories, including the prestigious ‘Shed of the Year’ award.

Did you spot it? A small difference?

In the lead up to R U OK? Day (Thursday 12 September), R U OK? have made a subtle change the their ‘Trust the Signs’ artwork to demonstrate the importance of noticing changes, no matter how small, in the the people around us.

R U OK? Day is a national day of action dedicated to reminding everyone to ask, “Are you OK?” and to remember every day of the year to support people who may be struggling with life’s ups and downs.

These things happen every day in Men’s Sheds, but it’s an important reminder for us all.

This year in the build-up to R U OK? Day Australians are being encouraged to Trust the Signs, Trust your Gut & Ask R U OK? Whenever you notice a change, no matter how small, trust your gut and start a conversation.

CLICK HERE to find resources on the R U OK? website for R U OK? Day and year-round conversations to help your members get involved and ready to trust the signs and start a conversation that could change a life.
