Men’s Sheds keeping the balance for Men’s Health Week

Men’s Health Week is an international celebration of the strengths of men and boys, implemented in Australia by the Men’s Health Information & Resources Centre (MHIRC). Each year the Australian Men’s Shed Association (AMSA) encourages all Men’s Sheds to participate in Men’s Health Week through community and shed events – and this year is no exception.

The theme for 2017 Men’s Health Week – Healthy Body, Healthy Mind: Keeping the Balance – naturally fits with the ethos of Men’s Sheds. Every shed works to make a positive contribution to their community through the prevention of social isolation, the promotion of positive health and wellbeing, and local community projects and activities.

“This year is more notable than ever, as we celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Australian Men’s Shed Association,” said David Helmers, AMSA Executive Officer.

To mark this anniversary, AMSA have partnered with the MHIRC to promote Men’s Health Week and the positive outcomes for men involved in Men’s Sheds.

“Around the world, people find they are healthier and happier through an involvement in Men’s Sheds,” said Mr Helmers.

To support positive health and wellbeing for all Australian males, AMSA developed and launched the Spanner in the Works?  male health initiative in 2011. The program is designed to engage men in positive health behaviours and to encourage men to take ownership of their health.

Men’s Sheds around the country hold Spanner in the Works? health events, at which local health professionals are on hand to provide free health checks for males of all ages.

“Find out how your local shed is celebrating during Men’s Health Week, and get involved,” said Mr Helmers.

Men’s Health Week will be held 12 – 18 June, 2017. Visit menshealthweek.org.au to find out more and locate an event near you.
